The EFC family is deeply saddened by the passing of our dear sister Joyce Lin. Joyce grew up in EFC Washington D.C. where her family served faithfully. She became a believer at a young age and was involved in various ministries of the church.
After earning a degree in computer science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and working in the IT field for a decade, Joyce felt called to ministry and enrolled in Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, it was at Gordon-Conwell when she discovered missionary aviation, a job that combined her interests in flying, computer technologies, and her love for Christ.
Joyce was planning and training to become a missionary pilot for a decade. She first interned with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) in 2010, earned her commercial license in 2015, and finally moved to Papua, Indonesia in 2019 serving with MAF as a pilot and IT specialist.
Early morning on May 12, 2020, Joyce took off from Sentani in an MAF Kodiak aircraft she had dreamed of flying since learning about missionary aviation. Her cabin was filled with school supplies and COVID-19 rapid test kits, which she was delivering to a remote village. Within minutes of takeoff, she reported an emergency and the aircraft descended into Lake Sentani soon after.
Joyce is survived by her parents and two sisters. As we pray for God’s comfort for the family, we also celebrate a life well-lived. Joyce knew clearly what her calling was, and she served the Lord faithfully by loving God and loving the people around her. She will be deeply missed and forever be an inspiration to believers all around the world.
